Spitalfields
A two-storey home designed for a reader above a store in central London underwent a refurbishment, utilising dark valchromat storage to re-order the plan and create ample storage for over 4000 books, magazines, programmes and music. The resulting bookcases become an organising feature, lining every wall, and creating deep reveals that protect the volumes from sun exposure. Minimal architectural intervention was sought; floors are repaired, sanded and sealed throughout, living spaces are given new connections to one another, bedrooms uplifted, and a modest new kitchen and bathroom break away from the natural palette seen elsewhere, using bright glazed tiles to add colour and contrast. The feature bathroom tiling takes inspiration from Matthew Newman’s zip paintings
