Gooch House
The design brief asked for a generous refurbishment of a dated 1960s bedsit, within it’s existing footprint. Our proposal transforms the currently congested and confused room into a modern, comfortable ‘nearly one bed’ studio flat. Rather than including a fold-out bed that clutters the living space, or an impractical platform bed, our proposal reclaims the window from the bathroom to create a light-filled separate bed nook, while retaining the generous feel of the living area.
The bathroom has been rearranged and compacted to make space for the nook, and the kitchen moves slightly to allow for multiple bed space arrangements. The textured glazing of the former bathroom window could be replaced from the inside (without changing the window frames). There is space for all appliances expected from a more standard one bed flat: a full sized washing machine, hob and oven are provided alongside a slim-line dishwasher. Storage is integrated at the entrance, and the layout is flexible to accommodate all manners of furniture depending on the new owner’s preferences and needs.
