St Mary of Eton

This Grade 2 listed church tower, has a footprint of 20sqm, yet is 20m high, making for a challenging but exciting volume in which to insert a living and dining area, bedroom, bathroom, office, library and circulation whilst maintaining privacy between them.

The staircase follows the perimeter of the tower, deftly dodging the gothic style windows and providing views out in every direction. The materials chosen are respectful of the church tower: natural timber and white plaster. This palette make a characterful and clear the distinction between new and old, whilst refraining from overpowering the beauty of the existing materials and volumes.

The scheme formed part of a wider development, with Matthew Lloyd Architects, and was awarded a RIBA National Award in 2015.
